The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India has implemented significant changes in aircraft maintenance training standards. In 2017, the DGCA introduced CAR 147 (Basic) certification, which sets new benchmarks for aircraft maintenance training institutions.
Prior to this, AME training institutes were operating under CAR Section 2 Series E Part VIII. However, to align with international standards, the DGCA phased out this older regulation, allowing existing institutes to induct their last batch of students in 2017 for completion by 2020.
Since then, most of these AME training institutes have successfully transitioned to the CAR 147 (Basic) certification, ensuring that they meet the higher standards required for training the next generation of aircraft maintenance engineers.
